How a Crate Washer Can Help Maintain Hygiene

Limit the spread of Bird Flu

"Keep it Clean with Crate Washer"

Bird flu, also called avian flu or avian influenza is a very Communicable disease for poultry (chickens, chicks, ducks and turkeys) and wild waterfowl. Across the Universe, there are many peculiar bird flu viruses. The spread of bird flu may be limited by things including clean transport crates with Crate Washers. In this blog, we'll tell you more about this.

Bird flu is the generic term for a disease profile that causes many various slots of flu viruses. There are cases where some virus strains may even pass from animals to humans. It does happen only with intensive and direct contact between infected animals and humans. People who have bird flu, experiences the same problems as with normal winter flu. Problems that infected animals experience include:

  • They don't make any noise
  • Breathing problem
  • Diarrhoea
  • Eye infection
  • Sudden death

The spread of bird flu may happen in many different ways. The first thing you think of may be infected poultry or infected birds that were already infected in the unhygienic (or) contaminated crates on arrival. But what you don't readily think about is the rapid spread of this disease causing fatal results ultimately with all those infected equipment or infected coop used as a means for transport.

Studies have shown that a major source of cross contamination between flocks of birds is from the #poultrycrate, which strongly suggests that current techniques especially manual and unsafe practices crate washing are relatively ineffective.

Clean Transport Crates:

The cause of the latter way  often happens when these crates and other means have not been cleaned well enough (or) having in contact with (any other) infected animals might be the reason. The fact is that the only source for transportation of chickens, turkeys and birds is mainly handled by plastic crates, boxes & trays which are more easy to clean.

If any infected animal comes in contact with these crates, and If the containers are not well cleaned before the reuse, the other animals could also get infected as this disease can spread very rapidly.

So, what is extremely important here is that these crates used for transportation at poultries need to be thoroughly cleaned before and after every use.

A study was administrated during a poultry processing plant in Lusaka, Zambia, to spot and describe bacteria found in chicken carcasses leaving the processing of plant for retail outlets. The thirteen different bacteria found within the chicken carcasses included:

  • Escherichia coli (41.7%)
  • Staphylococcus spp. (2.49%)
  • Pseudomonas spp. (6.71%)
  • Klebsiella spp. (1.91%)
  • Salmonella spp. (20.53)
  • Citrobacter spp. (6.71%)
  • Acinetobacter spp. (0.58%)
  • Proteus spp. (9.02%)
  • Flavobacterium spp. (1.15%)
  • Streptococci spp. (1.72%)
  • Alcaligenes spp. (0.77%)
  • Micrococcus spp. (3.84%)
  • Bacillus spp. (2.88%)

These results showed that the chicken carcasses entering the Zambian market proved to be a potential source of bacteria pathogens to not only consumers but also in many ways. It is therefore suggested that much more attention should be paid to the processing plant in order to control the bacterial contamination of poultry meat to the consumer point.

This research project aims to improve cleaning of #poultrytransportcrates in order to reduce microbiological contamination.

One aim of the study is to provide an assessment of the effectiveness of current poultry crate washing and #disinfectionprocesses in reducing the physical contamination and  micro-biological load of poultry crates.

Poultry crate disinfection – easy to use and highly effective

The poultry crate disinfection are often controlled by means of treatment time, number of steam ultrasound nozzles, pressure, ventilation, steam consumption and temperatures. These physical parameters are applied and can be adjusted to get optimum conditions.

The poultry crate disinfection treatment is a continuous process whereby crates are automatically transferred through the entrance doors by a conveyor at a given treatment time. While crates are completely inside the equipment, the doors closed on both sides to minimize steam consumption. The crate travels continuously through the chamber and out on the other side with complete washout these crates pass through the washing tunnel for soaking, cleaning and drying ensuring them get cleaned optimally, which therefore aptly combat any spread of bird flu – ready to be retrieved.

Poultry crate disinfection – a rapid and cost effective process

The poultry crate disinfection equipment has many advantages. It operates fast (less than 12m/min); allows for treatment adjustments if needed; and it can be easily integrated into any process line for continuous cleaning of poultry containers. It is estimated that the poultry crate disinfection system can disinfect over 400 crates per hour using minimal steam consumption and costs.
